Currywurst – cult and calories
The Currywurst is one of the specialties in Germany, which can be bought everywhere. Sung about by Grönemeyer, devoured by commissioners in crime thrillers, honoured with a museum and hotly debated whether with or without intestines: it is impossible to imagine snack culture without the cult classic.
Whether aromatic, spicy, very spicy, with chilli or cayenne pepper, patented, generational recipe or simply self-created, curry sprinkled on top or stirred in: As great as the variety of recipes is the controversy about what is the right curry sausage sauce.
The sausage itself is usually a fried or boiled sausage. It is made from minced meat, salt, spices and possibly additives. The minced mince is filled into natural casings and scalded in hot water or steam and shaped. With the great shortage of natural casings after the war, the idea of making sausages without casings came up. This was sold from the 50s onwards together with a curry tomato sauce colloquially as “curry sausage without intestine”.
The invention of the currywurst is attributed to a Herta Heuwer from Berlin, who sold sausages at a mobile stand. One day she developed a sauce made of tomato paste, curry powder and other spices, which she offered with her sausages. In 1958 the word/figurative mark “Chilup” was patented.
Since then, there have been numerous arguments about who really invented the currywurst: a Berliner or a Hamburger. Whoever it was: the currywurst is now indispensable.
Curious but true: The biggest currywurst producer is the VW factory.
Approx. 7 million Currybock sausages are produced annually in the company’s own butchery. With less fat than usual (only 20%), the best ingredients and of course their own creation of curry sauce (550 tons in 2019). From the 8 o’clock breakfast onwards, the staff are already well and truly taken care of here. If that’s not enough, you can also buy the sausage packs in one of the local retail chains or at the VfL Wolfsburg stadium.
